According to multiple sources, this Mustang was produced for the implicit purpose of providing a link between the 2 seater Mustang II concept of 1962 and the production car of 1964. Ford already had the 1965 Mustang design mostly finalized, but it didn't appear to be related to the 1962 concept with the same name. Hence, this version was thrown together to tie the two together.
